Why are uniform wooden dowels dangerous?
Most commercial cages come with perfectly smooth, uniform wooden dowels. When a bird stands on a uniform surface day after day, the exact same points on the bottom of their feet bear their entire body weight. Over time, this constant, unvarying pressure restricts blood flow, thins the skin, and leads to pressure sores and a severe, painful condition known as pododermatitis, or "bumblefoot."
How does manzanita help?
Our natural manzanita branches feature varying diameters, sweeping curves, and gentle tapers. Every time your bird moves along the branch, their grip changes. This constant articulation shifts the weight distribution, stimulates healthy blood circulation, and stretches the tendons and joints in their feet. It is the closest thing to a natural forest canopy you can provide.
A proper perch should allow your bird’s toes to wrap about two-thirds to three-quarters of the way around the wood. The front and back toes should never meet or overlap.
Note: Because our perches are naturally tapered, a single branch will often provide multiple resting diameters, allowing your bird to self-select the most comfortable grip.
Why is stainless steel so important?
Heavy metal toxicity is a fatal, completely preventable risk. Many mass-produced perches use zinc-plated or galvanized steel hardware to cut costs. If a bird chews on this metal, they can ingest toxic heavy metals ("New Wire Disease"). We strictly use 100% rust-proof stainless steel. It is biologically inert and completely safe for heavy chewers.
How do I install a My Manzanita perch?
Is your wood chemically treated?
Absolutely not. We never use bleach, pesticides, or chemical dips. Any chemical applied to wood can leach out or be ingested by a chewing bird.
How do you guarantee the wood is safe from wild pathogens?
We rely on strict thermodynamic sanitization. After being harvested from defensible-space clearances, the wood is dehumidified and placed in our custom kiln. We hold the ambient temperature between 200°F and 220°F for up to four hours, ensuring the internal core of the wood sustains a temperature of 160°F or higher. This completely eradicates wild pathogens, molds, and boring insects.
