Our stewardship begins in the foothills of Northern California. Decades of overgrowth and drought have turned dry, dead manzanita into a severe hazardous fuel source.
We do not clear-cut, and we never harvest live stands. Instead, we partner with private landowners and local defensible-space initiatives. We manually haul out deadfall and clear highly flammable brush that threatens local communities. By removing this hazard, we help protect the forest and our neighbors from catastrophic wildfires. The wood we reclaim is iron-hard, naturally weathered, and ethically sourced.
Raw manzanita holds residual moisture and carries wild debris. Before it ever sees a cage or terrarium, it must be properly prepared.
This is our absolute non-negotiable. We never use bleach, pesticides, or chemical dips to sanitize our wood—methods that can leave lethal residues behind for heavy-chewing birds.
Instead, we rely on precise thermodynamics. Every branch is placed into our custom kiln. We hold the ambient temperature between 200°F and 220°F for up to four hours. We monitor the wood to ensure its internal core sustains a temperature of 160°F or higher. This process guarantees the complete, chemical-free eradication of wild pathogens, boring insects, molds, and fungi.
A safe branch is useless if it is mounted with toxic hardware. Heavy metal toxicity—particularly zinc poisoning (New Wire Disease)—is a fatal and entirely preventable risk in captive birds.
We drill and tap our perches using only 100% rust-proof stainless steel. Every hanger bolt, fender washer, and wingnut is guaranteed safe. We strictly prohibit the use of zinc, galvanized steel, or toxic plated metals in our workshop. When you hand-tighten our hardware onto your cage, you can rest assured it is as safe as the sanitized wood itself.
